LITTLE BROTHERS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
We follow Jesus the Good Shepherd.
We claim His gospel as our first rule.
The Congregation of the Little
Brothers of the Good Shepherd (BGS) is a Roman Catholic pontifical institute of
religious Brothers, whose members profess the canonical, public vows of
chastity, poverty and obedience. We live together in community and join in
a variety of social service and health care related ministries to the poor and
needy throughout the United States, Canada, England, Ireland and Haiti.
The Congregation was founded on
January 19, 1951 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A. by Brother Mathias
Barrett. The Congregation's motto is "Charity Unlimited."
Brother Mathias' original inspiration was to serve Jesus Christ in the person of
the poor, destitute, and anyone in need of help. This continues to
motivate all those who share in Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd life,
mission and ministry.
The Little Brothers of the Good
Shepherd is a charitable non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation in the Official
Catholic Directory. We are registered as a non-profit tax-exempt agency in
New Mexico, California, Florida, Illinois and Ontario, Canada.
MINISTRY
The members of the congregation offer a diversity of health care and social service programs geared to meet the needs of those in our care.
-
We assist priests and religious during transitional periods in their lives by providing a supportive environment, which facilitates their return to active ministry.
-
We provide direct service to the homeless and disadvantaged members of our society. In doing so, we strive to meet the needs of the whole person. With justice and in cooperation with others, we attempt to help them attain their rightful place in society.
-
We provide care for elderly persons unable to function independently. We promote independent living
for the elderly and the means by which this is accomplished.
-
We provide hospice care for those living with a
terminal illness and promote a sacred reverence
for life, in all its forms, in all its stages and in every condition, recognizing the dignity of the person at
all times.
-
We provide care and programs for persons with developmental disabilities, and in doing so we attempt
to develop the individual's fullest potential, which may or may not lead to independent living.
-
We provide accommodation, care, and education for orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti,
enabling and encouraging each child to become a full participating member of society.
-
We provide supportive housing
programs to the elderly, psychiatrically disabled, physically disabled, and
people with HIV/AIDS.
